Lighthouse in Swinoujscie

This lighthouse, built in the late 19th century, is one of the largest attractions of Swinoujscie. The Lighthouse and Maritime Rescue Museum stands adjacent to the lighthouse.

It was built at end of the eastern breakwater which protects the entrance to the harbour. Its construction took three years and was lit for the first time on 1st December 1875. It is 68m high which, at the time of its construction, was a great building achievement. It has been the bearer of the palm, till modern times, amongst other lighthouses on the Polish coastline and on the Baltic Sea and is still one of the tallest in the world.

The lighthouse tower is centrally located in relation to the three-storey building. The technical room of the lighthouse keeper is located in a building on the south side. The height of the tower is 64.8m above ground level and the light is 68m above sea level. The light source is a 4.2kW bulb. Due to the difficult navigation conditions on the River Odra to the south of Swinoujscie, the lighthouse emits a red light as well as white.

The Lighthouse and Maritime Rescue Museum is located in a building adjacent to the lighthouse building. It is open daily throughout the year with its many interesting exhibits which include a divers outfit weighing 70kg with two bottles of 12kg each and a 4.2kW light bulb, as used in the lighthouse. Old fishing boats have been placed in front of the building.
