Chochołów

If you would like to see what old highland country villages looked like then Chochołόw is a must.

This is an authentic out door museum of “Podhale” architecture, yet it is full of life. Many cottages, some dating back to the 18th century are still standing. The cottages are set at right angles to the road. They have shingle covered roofs, and were built using enormous tree trunks. They are still inhabited today. A particularly fine example is the “Cottage from one fir” from the end of the 19th century, the front wall of which is made from a single fir tree. The recreated interiors of a traditional highland cottage and also mementos of the highlanders uprising in the year 1846 can be seen in the Chochołowski Uprising Museum.
