The Monastery of Bernardine in Przeworsk

At the eastern end of the city hill, near the old "Russian tract" Przeworsk-Jarosław, at the end of the Bernardyńska Street, among the trees there are visible the red brick walls of historic St. Bernardine Monastery

The temple owes its existence to the then owner of the town, Rafał Tarnowski, the Grand Marshal of the Crown, who founded the Church in 1461. In less than four years the continuation of the construction works was taken over by the brothers from the Order of St. Francis (Friars Minor Observant), commonly known as Bernardienes.

The construction, which is a magnificent example of religious architecture of old gothic, over the years had been expanding and reworking the building until it eventually took on its current appearance and shape. The original and yet very valuable relics of military architecture from the past are its walls, the tower (now the bell tower) and the two wings of the monastery: the eastern and southern wing. Starting the work on the ramparts and moats, and then the walls date back to the end of the fifteenth century. The monastery played the role of the fortress, was a very important part of the defense system of the city and gave shelter to the population during enemy raids. That was such during the Mongol attacks in 1489 and 1624.

The monastery Church of St. Barbara is a small, single-nave temple with the three sides separated presbytery. Its facade is decorated with gothic belt top with iron cross. Inside the temple there are numerous carved Baroque stalls, altars and paintings from the seventeenth century
