East of the Cross Church in Wełno

Beautiful polychromies in the Church.

The Church was built by Wojciech Rydzyński, the owner of the village in 1727. Log, formwork construction. The nave is surrounded by a roofed walk-around from the outside called ‘sobota’. There are two chapels at the sides forming a sort of a transept. There are two sacristies next to the presbytery, although the Church has only one nave. A martroneum in the north part of the nave connected to balconies situated along the north and south wall of the nave. The ceiling and walls covered by Adam Swach’s polychromies represent scenes related to the legend and cult of the Holy Cross: “The vision of emperor Constantine” (in the presbytery), “St. Helen’s Finding of the Wood from the Cross”(on the ceiling of the nave) or the figures of Christ, Mary and the apostles (on the walls of the presbytery and the nave). The Church’s interior equipment comes from the time of the Church’s construction.
