Synagogue in Tarnogród

Tarnogród’s Synagogue was built in the second half of the seventeenth century, on the basis of the privilege of ordinate Tomasz Zamoyski.

Seventeenth century Synagogue was completely renovated in the early nineteenth century, giving it a design which partially was preserved to this day. The rooms on the west side were built then, where a vestibule was built on the ground floor and the women's gallery on the first floor. During the World War II the Nazis desecrated the synagogue. After the war the building was threatened to collapse. It has been restored by the Central Committee of Polish Jews. In the 80s of the twentieth century, there was a community centre and a library placed in a former synagogue. It is now, next to the cemetery, the only remaining relic of Jewish culture in Tarnogród.
